Spring Awakening

Not long ago, I made a post about how I buy myself flowers. It's something I do to honor myself and to create beauty around me.

One comment on that post suggested I should buy flowers at Trader Joe's. I occasionally get flowers there, but they don't always have what I want, so it's not a regular occurrence.

However, following that comment, I decided to get a bouquet from T.J.'s the next time I went.

They didn't have what I really wanted, but I bought a bouquet of asters, which I liked enough. After trying out a few different vases, I picked one of my favorites.

I put the flowers on the table in my bedroom. Despite the vase, the asters didn't speak to me the way some of the other flowers have.

Typically, even if I don't like an arrangement initially, it starts to grow on me after a day or two. It's like we have to get to know each other.

That didn't happen with the asters. Instead, day by day, I was less pleased with them, and they actually seemed to decrease in beauty.

I blamed Trader Joe's for failing to provide a high quality bouquet. I blamed the flowers for not being the right kind. I was definitely never getting these flowers from there again.

Then I picked up the vase and noticed how light it felt. Did I forget to put water in it? Was I the reason the flowers didn't thrive and blossom more fully once I had them?

It's a simple mistake, not putting water in a vase. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's done it.

But this flower failure made me think about how many things we add to our lives, only to feel disappointment in them because they don't live up to our expectations. Rather than looking at what we didn't do to create the best scenario, we blame others for their failure.

With the flowers, I discovered the problem after a few days. But how many times have I failed to pick up the "vase" and see my role in a project or relationship that withered?

Luckily, I can buy more flowers. I can also give "water" to whatever I want to flourish before it dries out.
