A Foundation of "Failure"
I drew the piece below several months ago. It was an experiment that used tape to block off areas on a canvas. I didn't really like it and felt dissatisfied every time I looked back at it. Even though it was an experiment, it felt like a failure of sorts.
A few days ago I decided to do something else with it.
It took me a while to see how I could improve upon it in a way that spoke to me. Basically, I covered over all the blocks and the white lines with watercolor paint. The end result is something I'm really happy with and proud of.
Art is teaching me so many lessons, but this piece, in particular, helped me to embrace what appeared to be failure and use it to create something special and beyond what I imagined was possible.
It goes right along with this quote from a book I'm reading:
"Failure is the information you need to get where you're going."
- Rick Rubin in "The Creative Act: A Way of Being"
