Love Needs No Translation

I've been learning Mandarin Chinese since January. No specific purpose. It was just something I wanted to try.

Then last week, I was in Wisconsin with my family, many of whom are fluent in Spanish and some other languages. As such, I had the opportunity to dust off my rusty Spanish and converse a little with a visiting relative from Spain.

Though I've studied Spanish repeatedly, I've never felt confident speaking it. But suddenly faced with someone who needed my patience with English and was equally patient with my espanol, I found myself wanting to try.

Perhaps Marcos' kindness and encouragement helped me want to stumble through, as did my diligence with Chinese. Just listening to most of my family switching back and forth between other languages all weekend was pretty motivating.

Whatever the case, I jumped back into learning and practicing Spanish on the way back from Madison. I've been at it every day since.

And do you know what happened last night? On the way home from the airport, my Uber driver and I had a conversation in Spanish (and a little bit of French and English)!

It wasn't perfect or even great. But we talked and understood each other in limited amounts in three languages. Then, when I got home, this shirt - my art - was waiting for me. The ride home and this whole trip gave it a new relevance and meaning.

This story does not scratch the surface of what my travels over the last 10 days have meant to me. I am thrilled about the opportunity to be able to learn, listen, and speak in new ways, to understand words and people who once or for a time felt "foreign" to me while also feeling understood anew.
